In the Garden

Sometimes I read a hymn as part of my quiet time. C. Austin Miles (1868-1946) wrote the popular hymn “In the Garden”. Here’s the first verse, “I come to the garden alone, while the dew is still on the roses; And the voice I hear, falling on my ear, The Son of God discloses. And He walks with me, and He talks with me, and He tells me I am His own, and the joy we share as we tarry there, None other has ever known.”

Mine would look like this, “I come to my study alone, as my day breaks forth anew; and the voice I hear, with my inner ear, the Spirit of God discloses! And He walks with me and talks with me, and tells me I am His own, and the joy we share as we tarry there, to me is forever known.” We live in an ever changing world. But God is God! The Father, the Son and the Spirit are the same yesterday, today and forever! Throughout our Christian journeys, we all need mentors and encouragers. Don’t forget the beautiful resource of historical mentors and encouragers (like Miles), who have completed their journeys, leaving valuable spiritual markers waiting to refresh us!

Holy GOD, I pray for those who read this to be drawn into the garden of their inner person, where they can rest and be nourished by YOU! May they be blessed abundantly. In Jesus Name, Amen.
