Reflections on Psalms 31:1-5

“I run to you, God; I run for dear life. Don’t let me down! Take me seriously this time! Get down on my level and listen, and please–no procrastination! Your granite cave a hiding place, your high cliff aerie a place of safety. You’re my cave to hide in, my cliff to climb. Be my safe leader, be my true mountain guide. Free me from hidden traps; I want to hide in you. I’ve put my life in your hands. You won’t drop me, you’ll never let me down.” Psalm 31:1-5. (MSG)

3355840410_ca512e4105_zWe all experience meltdowns from time to time. In Psalm 31:1-5, David fought through one. In the midst of his passionate discussion with God, he exhibits something crucial. David practiced a healthy mental habit – speaking God’s truth to himself. “You’re my cave to hide in, my safe leader, my true mountain guide, free me from hidden traps, I want to hide in you, I’ve put my life in your hands!” When we speak truth to our inner person, we can expect God to become our cave to hide in, our safe leader, our true mountain guide! He will guide us past hidden traps as we put our lives in His hands. Learning to speak His Truth in the midst of our meltdowns will help us recover much faster emotionally!

Lord, may Your Spirit move us to run to You, abiding safely in Your Presence. May our inner person be still and permeated with Your Peace. In Jesus Name, Amen.
